EXPERIMENT WITH ARDUINO + MOTION SENSORS

Encoded Texture

This installation is a metaphor for the changes that the weaving industry in Bangalore has undergone over the past few decades.

It’s a reflection of our study researching the weaving community at Old Town Yelahanka where we saw hand-woven patterns that once adorned the saris replaced by mass-produced simple patterns produced on the power loom.

EXHIBITION NOTE

‘Encoded Textures’ was meant to make the audience question how technological changes affect society. The Jacquard which originally led to the emergence of the modern computing system is now being controlled by computers.

The installation consisted of vertically hanged saris, each of which was encoded with audio that could only be heard when the audience is in close proximity. The audio was a montage of the noise of the different looms and the conversations with the weavers. To stimulate the cacophony of the looms, the noise gets louder over time.
