Microsoft: Integrating To-Do for Teams

I was an individual contributor and designed all the features end-to-end. I collaborated with PMs and engineers in a distributed team to map out the scope of each feature along with executing the designs end-to-end.

I helped in designing 2 key features - Slash scenarios for quick access to files and calendar; and integrating the first version of Todo app for Teams.

DESIGN CONSTRAINTS

2 key constraints were creating solutions within the existing IA; and gathering requirements while communicating with remote teams.

ABOUT MICROSOFT TEAM

Microsoft Teams is the chat based application for better collaboration in the workplace. It’s part of the Office 365 suite. It was released in March 2017.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I was part of the founding team in the newly-formed Bangalore office in August 2017 and helped scale the design team scale from 3 to 7.

I was the design owner for 2 key features - Slash scenarios for quick access to files and calendar along with creating the framework for accessibility for the navigation bar. I collaborated with PMs and engineers in a distributed team to map out the scope of the feature along with executing the designs end-to-end.

 
 
 

Integrating To-Do for Teams

To-Do is a task creation and consumption app for Office 365. It was integrated with Team with limited functionality for personal tasks only.

Few key constraints were circumventing the existing IA that limited the app access by situating it inside the “more menu”, thus making it harder to find and defeats the purpose of creating a task quickly; along with gathering requirements while communicating with remote teams. So we designed a lightweight option that’s accessible from the navigation panel and designed the app for accessing advanced features like filters, tags etc.

DESIGN CONSTRAINTS

Annotations: #1 To-do tab appears only on clicking the “more menu”; #2 List view follows the existing IA of Teams; #3 Editable task list with due date, tags, and title; #4 Context specific chat on the right is an example of tasks created from the chats.
